Christmas Gifts

I have a nephew who has a play kitchen and lots of plastic play food. When I saw this pattern (Simplicty 2445), I thought of him. So for Christmas this year I made him a few to add to his collection:My favorite is the egg and egg carton.

For Christmas '08 and '09 I have ordered signs for my father for his cabin parking spots. Last summer he decided to put one of those signs on his cabin instead of his second parking spot. So he asked me order him another sign for Christmas this year. I decided to take it one step ahead and make him one instead. And instead of just having his last name on the sign, I wanted to have the name of the cabin and some scenery with it. After some help from siblings, we decided to name it "Taivaamme" which means "Our Heaven" because my dad is always referring to it as his heaven (and "our heaven" translated so much better than "my heaven" into Finnish). I debated between carving and woodburning (I have no experience in either one), and after doing research online, decided on woodburning. Here is the final product. (Keep in mind that I make no claims to being an artist, and have never done woodburning, so please don't judge it too harshly.) I was told that my father cried when he opened it up. That makes it all worth the emotional toll it has taken on me for the last month wondering if I'd be able to do it. Once I started working on it I actually really enjoyed it. I may be doing more projects like this in the future.
